ALTOONA TEACHERS RECEIVE CARE AWARDS
Four Altoona Area School District teachers received Educator CARE Awards during tonight’s business meeting of the Altoona Area School Board. These awards are presented annually to an elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a curriculum specialist who have demonstrated commitment, achievement, responsibility and excellence in the classroom.
Joyce Valentino Chestney, who has been teaching at Baker School since 1996, was the elementary recipient. This Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduate, who began her teaching career in 1973 at Edison School, has also taught at Wright and Washington-Jefferson.
Julie Ahner Fleck, who has been an Altoona Area High School counselor since 1993, was the curriculum specialist to be honored. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Penn State and a master’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She joined the AASD staff as an English teacher at the high school in 1986
Meghan L. Bradley, was the secondary educator to receive this award. Following graduation from Penn State in 2007, she was hired to teach physics at Altoona Area High School, a position she holds today.
A fourth CARE Award was presented posthumously to Janet Bergstrom Yon, who lost her battle with cancer last December. She held a bachelor’s degree from Penn State and a master’s from St. Francis University. She was nominated by the staff at McAuliffe Heights-Irving where she had been a first and second grade teacher since this award-winning magnet school program began in 1997. She began her teaching career at Wright School in 1989.
Each of the award winners received a plaque in recognition of their excellence in teaching along with a wristwatch from Kranich's Jewelers in the Logan Valley Mall.
The Educator CARE Awards have been presented on an annual basis since 1985 by the School District and the Altoona Area Education Association.
